Who We Are
The Salvation Army Mission The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
Hampton Roads Area Command Vision
To have the Hampton Roads area be a place where people of all ages live in safe and sustainable communities in which differences are respected and people are empowered to learn, work and worship in freedom.
What We Do
The Salvation Army is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Salvation Army began its work in Hampton Roads in 1905, following its arrival in the U.S. from its London base. The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command provides services to the Southside Hampton Roads region and surrounding communities.
Our services include emergency assistance, emergency shelters, feeding programs (food pantries and soup kitchens), transitional housing programs for Veterans (Men’s Hope Centers) and women with children (HOPE Village), seasonal assistance programs, family services (Pathway of Hope), substance abuse treatment (Adult Rehabilitation Center), youth programs, spiritual care, disaster relief, and volunteer outreach.
The Salvation Army is led by officers—ordained ministers—who oversee the many programs and services in the area. They also serve as administrators, counselors, and youth leaders. Major Chris and Sandy Flanagan serve as Area Commanders for the Salvation Army of Hampton Roads. Their dedication to serving others is rooted in their love for Christ. They are supported by a team of officers, staff, and board members.
