The Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads (ASYMCAHR) exists to support and strengthen the lives of local military families. We offer a robust set of programs and services specifically designed for this purpose. We serve young junior enlisted families across ALL BRANCHES of the military. The challenges and experiences for these families are unique- the impact real. We provide an environment where the service member can focus on their mission while their family is armed with vital resources on the homefront.
Bridging the gap as a compliment to DOD programs, our services focus on child development initiatives, family support systems, providing a hand up during challenges, and honoring the impact of service in Hampton Roads. We have the backs of our military families with the support of our community.
What We Do
The Programs we offer:
Operation Little Learner - We bring our facilitated, no-cost, curriculum based, social responsibility and youth development programming directly to military housing centers where young service members and their families reside. Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads provides the setting to make new friends, build community, handle conflicts, develop children's cognitive and social skills and encourage an overall healthier and resilient life. Parents and children connect to a support network of other moms and dads experiencing the same military life challenges as they are. These relationships are especially critical when the support of family is not nearby.
Operation Hero- We assist young school aged children who have been identified as at-risk socially or academically due to their parents being in the military or deployed. Counselors work in a small group environment helping these children understand and develop positive coping strategies to overcome the unique challenges they experience as a result of frequent moves and family separation due to deployments. Program is mobile and is held at local elementary schools. School locations change frequently in order to serve the entire community.
Child Development Before and After Care- Our STEAM based curriculum is a hands-on experience focusing on academic engagement by our instructors and facilitators, improvement of gross motor skills and development of role modeling and leadership. Transportation from the student's school to our facility are included. Program is open to all with enrollment and fee scale prioritized towards children of military service members E-5 and below, those most vulnerable.
Operation Camp Hero Summer Camp- We engage military children in a focused, structured, but fun environment of childhood education. Curriculum is STEAM based. Socialization skills and healthy living behavior is gained through our licensed Summer Camp retreats. Each week is themed to enhance learning while developing strong and resilient military children.
Operation Holiday Joy- We coordinate a community event to provide holiday turkey dinners to young junior enlisted families who are financially challenged.
Operation Ride Home- Along with our National partner, Jack Daniel's, we provide travel assistance to military families who are experiencing financial hardships and are not able to travel home for the holidays.
Father/Daughter Ball- This Ball allows daughters to have some one-on-one time with Dad. Frequent deployments and and extended separations can strain relationships and impact a child's wellbeing. Each year is a themed Ball with dinner and dancing and quality time with Dad and daughter(s)!
