Who We Are

Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International is a true world leader in addressing today’s issue of poverty housing. Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads is one of more than 1,500 affiliates in the United States. Since its founding in 1988, Habitat SHR has built or renovated more than 200 homes to qualified, hardworking, low-income families in the South Hampton Roads community. This affiliate completed its first house in 1990 in Portsmouth’s Prentis Park neighborhood.

MISSION

Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads’ mission is to build affordable homes that strengthen families and communities in South Hampton Roads. We serve all seven geographical entities that comprise South Hampton Roads: Chesapeake, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach.

VISION

A world where everyone has a decent place to live.

What We Do

Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads believes in offering a “hand up” not a “hand out” to families unable to obtain conventional home financing. We provide zero percent net interest mortgages on new and renovated homes to families with incomes that generally range between 50-80% of the area median income. Habitat homebuyers only pay the cost of the land and construction - usually about 75% of market appraisal.

Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads builds and renovates simple, decent, energy efficient two, three, and four bedroom homes. These homes are then sold at no profit to our partner families, who pay back a zero percent net interest loan. All proceeds from home sales are redistributed to build other Habitat homes. Before purchasing a home, partner families are required to complete 200 hours of “sweat equity” and take financial literacy, budgeting, and home repair classes to ensure they will be successful homeowners.
