Who We Are

Girls on the Run Hampton Roads is not for runaway girls, and we are not a track team. We inspire girls with concrete strategies, in the dawn of adolescence, to be joyful, healthy and confident. We focus on nutrition, non-competitive exercise, self-esteem and on being a "stand-byer, not a bystander. Our 20-lesson curriculum beautifully integrates skills to develop these essential habits over a period of 12 weeks after school. Our girls show positive growth in the classroom, on the playground and at home. In Hampton Roads, we are reaching 1850 girls in 120 schools across 10 school systems, and we have big plans to reach more. Our program would not be possible without the volunteer coaches who lead the teams of girls after school. They provide healthy snacks, conduct the lessons from our award winning, evidence-based curriculum, and serve as role models to these important leaders of the future. Our coaches are nationally certified, and qualified to coach at any GOTR council in the country. Educators are often coaches, and they are eligible to earn professional development points when they complete the coach training. Each season a coach gets a new box of materials from our council to assist in delivering the curriculum in the best manner. We need assistance in building these boxes before our next season begins.

What We Do

At the end of the 12 week after school program, the girls have developed the strength and stamina, emotionally and physically to complete a 5K a 5K Celebration event. 80% of our girls are from lower income households, and receive scholarships to participate. The support of people like you enables us to empower young girls to develop self-respect, health and fitness. Together we are shaping strong women leaders for our future.
